Kohinoor Diamond (aka Koh-i-Noor): The Kohinoor
Diamond is one of the most famous diamonds in the world. The Kohinoor diamond
was first mentioned in 1306 when it was taken from a Rajah of Malwa, whose
family had held the diamond for centuries. It was described as weighing 186
carats and was an oval cut white diamond - the shape and size of a small hen's
egg. The Kohinoor diamond belonged to various Indian and Persian rulers but it
became part of the Crown Jewels of England at the time that Queen Victoria was
proclaimed empress of India. The Kohinoor was re-cut at this time and now
weighs 108.93 carats and is kept in the Tower of London.
The Sancy: The Sancy, a pale yellow diamond of 55.23 carats (11.05 g), was once reputed to have belonged to the Mughals of antiquity, but is more likely of Indian origin owing to its cut which is unusual by Western standards. The shield-shaped stone comprises two back-to-back crowns (the typical upper half of a stone) but lacks any semblance to a pavilion (the lower portion of a stone, below the girdle or midsection).
Cullinan Diamond: The Cullinan diamond is the largest gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3106.75 carat rough weight. About 10.5 cm long in its largest dimension, it was found 26 January 1905, in the Premier No. 2 mine, near Pretoria, South Africa.
Hope Diamond: The Hope Diamond, also known as "Le Bijou du Roi" ("the King's Jewel"), "Le bleu de France" ("the Blue of France"), and the Tavernier Blue, is a large, 45.52-carat (9.10 g), deep-blue diamond, now housed in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. It is blue to the naked eye because of trace amounts of boron within its crystal structure, and exhibits red phosphorescence after exposure to ultraviolet light.
The Graff Pink: The Graff Pink, a rare 24.78 carat pink diamond, once owned by American celebrity jeweller Harry Winston, has been described as "one of the greatest diamonds ever discovered". The diamond, mounted in a ring, was sold by Sotheby's auctioneers in Geneva, Switzerland on 16 November 2010.
Archduke Joseph:The Archduke Joseph is a colorless, antique cushion-shaped brilliant, originally weighing 78.54 carat, purchased by Molina Jewelers of Arizona sometime in the late-1990s and slightly re-cut to 76.45 carat to improve clarity and symmetry. It is, on the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) color and clarity scales, a D grade (colorless to the highest grade), IF (Internally Flawless, flawless to the second highest grade) diamond.
The Steinmetz Pink: The Steinmetz Pink is a diamond weighing 59.60 carats (11.92 g), rated in color as Fancy Vivid Pink by the Gemological Institute of America. The Steinmetz Pink is the largest known diamond having been rated Vivid Pink.
